Playing for Good is an Own Your Own Universe outreach program that uses the power of art and live music to build connection, foster inclusion, and bring joy to our community.
Through arts & crafts workshops or performances at memory care communities, senior centers, libraries, Merry Martindale, and other select events throughout the year, we create meaningful experiences that celebrate every person’s value, dignity, and ability to connect through the arts.
Calling all volunteer musicians and artists!
If you love to play music, we’d love to have you join Playing for Good. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or performer or simply enjoy sharing songs with others, you’ll have opportunities to bring live music to people who need it most. Together, we create moments of joy, spark memories, build community, and remind people that music has the power to heal, connect, and uplift.
Team OYOU Compensates Team Leaders
In addition to our volunteer program, Own Your Own Universe also hires and compensates musicians and artists to lead Playing for Good programs and performances throughout the year.
If you’re interested in volunteering or leading a Playing for Good event, please contact us or sign up for our email list to learn about upcoming opportunities.
Whether gathering in a Song Circle or volunteering through Playing for Good, we believe music creates connection, community, and hope!
OYOU Song Circles are collaborative, workshop-style gatherings for ages 10 and up designed to help participants improve their musicianship, develop original songs, and grow as artists in a supportive community. Songs are shared in a circle format, with each participant taking a turn leading an original song or a cover tune out of our songbook. Members are encouraged to listen actively, support one another, and contribute in ways that enhancen the person leading the song.
Whether you’re sharing a new song, exploring ideas, or building confidence as a performer, Song Circles provide a welcoming space for creative exchange, constructive feedback, and artistic growth. By keeping participation simple, respectful, and focused on the music, participants create an environment where creativity flourishes and everyone has the opportunity to learn, connect, and be heard.

Carol Champagne
OYOU's Treasurer
Workshop Host
OYOUth & Song Circle Coordinator
Carol Champagne is a singer/songwriter who expresses hope through her lyrics and finds fulfillment in sharing the joy that music can bring. She grew up in Louisiana, playing hymns in church, singing in choirs, and accompanying singers on piano. She has lived over 30 years in the Austin area, where she is fortunate to be surrounded by amazing musicians and songwriting mentors. She is happiest when noodling around on the piano, playing guitar, writing songs, singing with friends, spending time with her husband and grown kids, and going for walks at McKinney Falls SP.
Carol taught her two sons basic piano when they were little, and in 2015 she started teaching piano lessons to friends’ children as well. Her teaching business has grown since then, and she continues to welcome new students and pass on the joy of music to others.

Jeanne Ply
OYOU Song Circles
Playing for Good Coordinator
Team Leader
Jeanne Ply is a multi-instrumentalist whose love of music began as a child singing around her Granny’s piano. She grew up playing violin and piano while singing in church and school choirs, laying the foundation for a lifetime of making music and serving others. After college, Jeanne began her first career as a Registered Music Therapist at Travis State School, where she led sensory stimulation groups, choirs, handbell ensembles, and instrumental groups for adults with intellectual disabilities. She later pursued a second career as a speech-language pathologist, serving students in Central Texas school districts for more than 20 years. In retirement, Jeanne has embraced her lifelong dream of performing. She plays fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and piano, writes original songs, and performs with several bands. She especially enjoys improvising, singing harmony, participating in music jams, and sharing songs with friends through church ensembles and song circles. As the mother of an extraordinary child with special needs, Jeanne has experienced firsthand the power of music to inspire and transform lives. That understanding fuels her passion for OYOU’s Playing for Good program, where she brings music to communities throughout the year. Jeanne’s greatest joy comes from her husband, two children, three grandsons, and extended family. She believes every day is a gift and often reminds her friends, “We have to plan the fun in order to get it done!”

Dana Jones was born in Texas and has devoted her life to growing, loving and learning (most often the hard way!). She's been a jack of many trades, a homeschooling mom, and currently spends workdays as an Office Administrator for a commercial HVAC company. In her spare time, you'll find her day drinking with her husband, writing, reading all kinds of books, listening to music, bragging about her grown children, talking with her spirit guides, reading cards with friends, loving on dogs, dreaming of more boots and more jewelry, and doing all she can to throw more positive out into the universe.
Kim Kyle: Strength, History, and Heart
OYOU Workshop host, OYOUth
Teaching and Performing Artist
Team Leader
Kim Kyle is a brilliant Texas songwriter and cancer survivor whose life and music are woven deeply into the fabric of the state’s music scene. A longtime fixture of the Houston music community, she is a powerful and seasoned performer and vocalist who began her career more than four decades ago in a trio with Marie English and Lisa Morales, opening for luminaries such as Chris Isaak and k.d. lang. She later fronted the band Kim Martin & Mustang and spent years as a dynamic lead vocalist in various cover and country bands across Texas and Oklahoma, playing legendary venues from Houston’s Mucky Duck alongside Houston great Jack Saunders, to performing in the house band at Tulsa’s storied Wormy Dog — a pivitol venue that helped shape and establish the Red Dirt genre and sound. These days, she continues to perform in a variety of ensembles, including alongside longtime sideman and frontman Willie B in his cover band, Tacocat.
Beyond the stage, Kim devoted herself as a caregiver to her mother — a role that reflects the same strength, grit, and heart that define her music. After stepping away for a time, she returned to performing with renewed fire, continuing to bring authenticity, soul, and Texas spirit to every stage she graces (Website https://kimkylemusic.com/)

Assistants:
Val Crevaling & Cecily Howze
Susan was born in Texas and raised in Round Top and Houston. She's currently living in San Marcos. Creating art has always been part of her life. Shae says she has a kaleidoscope brain, and has always been on the lookout for objects to reclaim for different purposes. In 1972, she attended Texas State University to pursue a degree in Commercial Art. During college she designed advertising for a local record shop, that was then used in the University Star. She then began working at Texas State University in the Travel Office, where she designed the logo for the VP of Finance newsletter. Retiring after 28 years, the same year, she began working at the San Marcos Farmers Market. The Market allowed her more time for creativity. She later began experimenting with Mosaics and Cement art, and developed a love for both.
