Soldier's Songs & Voices

Because of Covid19, veterans have not been able to safely meet in person, at The Bugle Boy, in La Grange, Texas. In response to this challenge, The Bugle Boy formed a collaboration with the organization Own Your Own Universe to deliver FREE online workshops for our Soldier Songs & Voices participants! This is NOT limited to Veterans who have participated in our past workshops but ANY Veteran or Active Duty Military person. ALL online classes, events, and workshops listed at this website are available for FREE to ANY Veteran or Active Duty Military person.

“I got my hand injured, and thought I would never even play guitar again, and then things started coming together, Suddenly I am meeting famous song writers, and they are saying that I can write. The VA repaired my hand, and now thanks to all this coming together, through God and Soldiers Songs I have written about forty songs, and performed a few live on stage.”

Jazz Guitar W/Whit Smith: Saturday May 22nd & Sunday May 23rd 1:00 - 2:30PM

All levels

Suitable for ages 12 and up

Whit Smith is a founder of the world traveling "Hot Club of Cowtown." Based in Austin, Texas the band has toured and recorded consistently since 1997 and has opened shows for Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Robert Earl Keen to Brian Ferry and Roxy Music. Whit is known for his unique and highly stylized swing guitar playing drawing influences from Django Reinhardt, Eldon Shamblin, George Barnes and Les Paul and an entire world of rare and esoteric guitarists. An experienced teacher, Whit makes simplifying, understanding and application the goal for all material shared! Everyone walks away with something new to play! In these first two classes we will look at a Western tune (Don't Fence Me In), and an early pop/swing jazz tune ( Ain't Misbehaving). Beginning with the basic chords and the progression and adding additional chord voicing, (shapes) to create more movement as the lesson progresses. Drills for mini-chord cadences are often provided for those who want to make their versions more ornate. A basic ability with some bar chords is helpful but all are welcome.

Whit says, "I have been playing swing and western swing all over the world for almost 25 years at this point. I specialize in the 1930s and 40’s flavors!"

"Psychic Pathways" W/Dana Pendland Jones: March 24th Kickoff!

12 week spirituality class

We kick things off March 24th!

Classes will be Wednesday's from 6:30 to 7:30 with occasional breaks now and then!

Please purchase your book in advance and read all the way through Chapter 1 before the first class meeting. Books are easily available on Amazon, Ebay, etc.

Psychic Pathway Class Description

Coincidence or synchronicity? Are you an empath? Do you feel like your intuition is usually right? Do you have that little voice that guides you? Do you feel like you have a guardian angel or angels? How did those missing keys suddenly appear? Do you think you may have some psychic abilities? The truth is, we likely all do, we just need to embrace them!!

Author Sonia Choquette says, “Helping others find their souls’ work is my soul’s work.” What a great mindset!! In her book “The Psychic Pathway: A Workbook for Reawakening the Voice of Your Soul”, Choquette takes the reader on a 12-week journey of spiritual exploration, education, and growth.

Dana Jones, who has adapted Sonia’s words above as her mantra, will help guide this group as we journey down the pathway together. Let’s learn more and celebrate our spiritual gifts – both those we wish to share and those we wish to just explore within.  This is a really fun, educational, positive, non-scary, no weirdness, non-judgmental, enlightening, and safe place to learn and grow. Thought provoking, heart-warming, peace giving and encouraging, it’s a pathway that may bring you to find your soul’s work.

About Dana Jones:

Dana Jones was born in Texas and has devoted her life to growing, loving and learning (most often the hard way!). She's been a jack of many trades, a homeschooling mom, and currently spends workdays as an Office Administrator for a commercial HVAC company. In her spare time, you'll find her day drinking with her husband, writing, reading all kinds of books, bragging about her grown children, talking with her spirit guides, reading cards with friends, loving on dogs, dreaming of more boots and more jewelry, and doing all she can to throw more positive out into the universe.

Ordinary Elephant: Storytelling through Song

All levels

All ages

Class is taught by Pete and Crystal Damor of the songwriting duo, "Ordinary Elephant."

Supplies needed: Pen, paper ... we will be doing some writing exercises

About the Class:

Songs tell stories. Whether these stories are our own, or belong to someone we’ve never met or to a 100-year-old oak tree, if they are rooted in emotional truth, they are capable of making a connection with, and moving, the listener. Stories can pass on wisdom, perspective, and healing. When in song form, we are able to layer and meld the foundational lyric and language with melody and arrangement to create an economical piece of sonic art.

As songwriters, we are in service to the song and the story it wants to tell. We are conduits who need to get out of our own way. In this class we will explore how we personally work to keep this at the forefront in our approach. Between Part One & Two, we will cover broad concepts and thought processes that we ground ourselves in when writing, and then delve into specific tools for helping to tap into ideas. We will look at ways to effectively expand those ideas and develop them into a structure that helps the story be heard. We will also touch on musical choices and arrangement and how these work with the lyrics and language to tell the whole story.

About Ordinary Elephant:

International Folk Music Awards 2017 Artist of the Year Ordinary Elephant captivates audiences with their emotionally powerful and vulnerable songs, letting the listener know that they are not alone in this world. The collaboration of husband and wife Pete and Crystal Damore, their connection, and their influences (such as Gillian Welch, Guy Clark, Anais Mitchell) all meet on stage. “Two become one, in song...hand-in-glove harmonies surprise the listener with focused intensity and musical mastery,” says Mary Gauthier. The Associated Press is calling their latest album, Honest, “one of the best Americana albums of the year.”

Plank, Dobro, and Lap Steels: Music Workshop

Jeff Plankenhorn! Plank, Dobro, and Lap Steels: Music Workshop

This class is great for all levels! Dig into valuable pointers to play better, talk about gear, and more from a powerhouse performer, sideman, writer, and instrumentalist.

About Jeff:

Jeff Plankenhorn, singer-songwriter and all things strings multi-instrumentalist—guitar, lap steel, mandolin, piano, upright bass—began his career as a boy soprano in Ohio. After studying music theory and composition at University of Michigan, Texas beckoned when Ray Wylie Hubbard enticed Jeff to join his band. Slide guitar virtuoso, Jeff spent his early career backing the likes of Hubbard and Joe Ely. His patented lap slide guitar, “the Plank,” with a distinctive sound derived from the instrument's square neck and electric guitar body—netted him Austin Music Awards 2017 “Best Miscellaneous Instrument”.

Now a potent solo artist, his larger-than-life presence on stage binds together a host of talents into a powerful whole. His soulful roots rock gained him a seat among the best contemporary Americana songwriters, while the vocal clarity and power developed in his early years is unmistakable in his poignant baritone now. Jeff’s deep sense of community is evident in the Purgatory Players Gospel brunch, contributing 153,275 meals to the Texas Food Bank in 2019 and his fundraising efforts for the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. He has collaborated with Ray Wylie Hubbard, Joe Ely, Patty Griffin, Ruthie Foster, Bob Schneider, the Flatlanders, “Scrappy” Jud Newcomb and more.

Wendy Colonna

Feeling stuck? Thinking back on your New Year’s goals and wondering what happened?  Noticing the gap between where you are and where you want to be getting wider instead of more narrow? Do you have a vision of a more wholehearted you that you just can’t quite seem to access?

Perfect. You may finally be ready to ditch the habits and beliefs that have been holding you back from becoming who you KNOW deep down you can become.

Let’s be honest, we can’t expect different results from the same mindset and actions. If what you’ve got going on isn’t working, WHY NOT explore what’s possible when you truly embrace the unknown!

In our workshop, we’re going to get creative.  We’re going to get vulnerable. We’re going to play.  We’re going to go deep.

We’re going to explore some ways of being and doing that may get you closer to the results you’re dreaming of and help that unhelpful inner critic to consider becoming an inner cheerleader.

We’re going to open our minds to some simple, but powerful things we can do each day to step toward joy with accountability and curiosity.

Cary Cooper: Songwriting Workshop

All Levels Welcome

From beginning to advanced

Ages 15 and up

Cary is a captivating performer, and award winning songwriter.  In 2014, she left her native state of Texas for the mountains of Western North Carolina; and the influence of her adopted Appalachian roots can be heard in the songs of her latest recording, "Case Of The Hopefuls" set to release in late November, 2017.  Cary’s songs are simple, and quirky in nature, drawing you in with pop melodies and then hitting you over the head with lyrics that are deceptively deep.  Guitars in the Classroom calls Cary “the Anne LaMott of songwriting…except she can get to the heart of things in 3 minutes instead of 200 pages.”  Cary is a past winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Competition as well as finishing 2nd and 3rd at the 2012 Rocky Mountain Folks Festival and Telluride Bluegrass Festival competitions, respectively. Don’t miss Cary Cooper.  She’ll leave you with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Cary Cooper says:

"Do you only write when inspiration strikes and these days it’s just not striking?

Let me share with you a few tricks and tools I’ve learned to use when I’m just not feeling it.

In this workshop, we’ll do a little talking/learning, but we’ll also do a good bit of writing!  Bring your pen, your instrument, and your sense of humor and prepare to have some fun! I've written hundreds of songs.  Some have won contests and some have ended up at the dump.  But I loved the process of writing every single one.  I can help you learn to love the process too. Another thing we will cover is how to arrange your songs so they don't all sound the same.  I was a dancer before I was a songwriter and I've found my skills as a choreographer very useful as a songwriter.  I hope you'll join me!"
