Jackson Emmer has quietly built his reputation as a deft songwriter and commanding singer on the outskirts of country music. His work blends humor with heartache, and tradition with exploration. In 2018, Emmer received national attention for his sophomore album, Jukebox. His follow up record, Alpine Coda, is set for release October 2nd, 2020. Emmer’s music has been featured in Rolling Stone, NPR, and the Cannes Film Festival. He lives in Carbondale, Colorado.

Danny Schmidt & Carrie Elkin

Advanced Songwriting Class

Sunday, November 15th 10:00 - 11:30AM

About Danny:

Named to the Chicago Tribune's list of the "50 Most Significant Songwriters in the Last 50 Years," Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt has amassed a cult following for his stunningly poetic, poignant lyricism.

On Carrie:

Carrie Elkin is one of those rare artists with a tidal wave singing voice, and a stage whisper writing voice that brings you to the edge of your seat, emotionally. Like Patty Griffin or Brandi Carlile, she straddles the Americana, Folk, and Indie Rock worlds, where meaningful songs meet the fierce-yet- fragile voices of powerful women.

Danny Schmidt & Carrie Elkin - Advanced Songwriting Class

This class is tailored for folks who already know how to play an instrument, and have written at least a handful of songs.  The workshop will be a discussion, conversation, and Q&A about their songwriting processes, covering such topics as:

- writing in an emotionally authentic voice

- ways in which we can apply craft to refine our writing to make a good song great, and to make every song better

- ways for finding inspiration

- tricks and tips for establishing good habits of writing

One unique aspect to having a songwriting conversation with Danny and Carrie together is that, while they’re both experienced and distinguished songwriters, they couldn’t have more contrasting writing styles and writing processes.  And so a discussion with them together illuminates a fundamental truth about songwriting:  There’s no right or wrong way to do this  . . .  only the way that works for YOU.

The Artist Way: A Creative Journey to Greater Awareness

We start August 13th, 2020

Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:00

This class lasts for 14 weeks. We meet about once a week, online, for one hour. Usually Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:00PM. You'll need to purchase the book and a journal in which to write in, in advance. It's an intense program. It does require a commitment to trek through the workshop.

We are a relaxed group. Going through the book takes 12 weeks but the additional 2 weeks is to allow time to get the class launched and understood. It takes time to get your footing.

Sometimes we miss a week to catch up. So it does end up being a little longer than 12 weeks.

"The Artist Way," by Julia Cameron is not exclusively about writing! It is about discovering and developing the artist within whether a painter, poet, screenwriter or musician but it is a lot about writing. If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It's about learning to pay attention." — Anne Lamott
