Writing Memorable Lyrics and Poems Using Vision, Movement, Sound, and Form W/Candace Hastings

Saturday Sept. 26th Writing W/Candace Hastings 1:00 - 2:30PM

Is there a line of a poem or song so memorable and close to your heart that you’ll never forget it? Have you ever wondered how poets and lyricists write lines like that? This workshop demystifies the craft of writing powerful song lyrics and poems by examining vision, movement, sound, and form. You’ll leave having more confidence and more tools in your lyrical toolbox.

Please bring a verse from a favorite song or poem to work with and share with the group.

Dr. Candace Hastings is a creative writing teacher and co-author of The Creative Writing Guide by Longman Publishing. Songwriter Adam Carroll talks about his early days: “I studied classical guitar at Tyler Junior College, but I wasn’t very good at competing in the guitar program,” Carroll says. “I discovered a creative writing teacher, Candace Schaefer [Hastings] …  at the college, and it just blew me away.” Candace studied creative writing in graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado and was mentored by renowned Japanese-American poet Mitsuye Yamada. She loves helping writers find their groove!

The Artist Way: A Creative Journey to Greater Awareness

We start August 13th, 2020

Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:00

This class lasts for 14 weeks. We meet about once a week, online, for one hour. Usually Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:00PM. You'll need to purchase the book and a journal in which to write in, in advance. It's an intense program. It does require a commitment to trek through the workshop.

We are a relaxed group. Going through the book takes 12 weeks but the additional 2 weeks is to allow time to get the class launched and understood. It takes time to get your footing.

Sometimes we miss a week to catch up. So it does end up being a little longer than 12 weeks.

"The Artist Way," by Julia Cameron is not exclusively about writing! It is about discovering and developing the artist within whether a painter, poet, screenwriter or musician but it is a lot about writing. If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It's about learning to pay attention." — Anne Lamott
